Week Three- Super Success!

Superhero Powers — Watch Video

It appears that events that depict structural racism in our country are being exposed weekly. While we know these incidents have occurred for hundreds of years, advances in technology have led to broader awareness. These incidents are not just happening in some very far away place, they are also happening here in our community of Marin.

On Thursday, Sept. 3, Instagram accounts promoting anti-Semitic content were brought to the attention of the Redwood High School administration in the Tamalpais Union High School District. Their main content included lists of Jewish students on a “target list.” The accounts have since been taken down, and in an email sent to the Redwood community, Principal David Sondheim confirmed that the incident is being looked into by the district and the Central Marin Police Authority.

You might be thinking, what does this incident have to do with me? Everything! Creating a just community is the responsibility of the collective. Please talk to your Panther about the importance of committing to the following:

  • I will seek to gain understanding of those who are different from me.

  • I will speak out against prejudice and discrimination.

  • I will reach out to support those who are targets of hate.

  • I will promote respect for people and help foster a prejudice-free school.

  • I believe that one person can make a difference – no person can be an “innocent” bystander when it comes to opposing hate.

  • I recognize that respecting individual dignity and promoting intergroup harmony are the responsibilities of all students.

We have to actively build inclusive communities. To not do so, is the antithesis of progress. We appreciate your partnership in doing so. We stand in solidarity with the Redwood Administration.

6th grade parents: WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) is a year-long mentoring and transition program for our newest Panthers. Next week, 8th grade WEB leaders will be hosting a virtual WEB gathering on Thursday, 9/17 at 2:30 pm. All 6th graders are invited to attend! Students will receive an invite and Zoom link sent to their school google account before Thursday. Please help remind your 6th grader to check their school email and log into their WEB Zooms at the correct time.

Parent Workshop: On Thursday, our school counselors, Cheryl and Ashley, hosted a parent workshop on Calming Strategies for Parents and Teens. As one parent shared after the workshop, “It is always important to remember to take care of ourselves so we can take care of our kids”. Please check out the slides to the workshop here, and reach out to Ashley or Cheryl, if you have any questions.

This past week, counselors met with all 6th grade classes to talk about strategies to manage stress and how to meet with their school counselor. All students also completed a counseling survey, and counselors will be setting up counseling groups over the next few weeks. If you would like your child to participate in a counseling group, please send an email to Ashley or Cheryl.
