Become a Miller Creek Environmental Ambassador - This special Miller Creek volunteer award is for students who find a problem in our environment and then make an action plan to help to solve it. This link will show you the guidelines of the opportunity.

 

Yes Volunteer Service - Help our community, gain valuable skills, and make a difference! You will be recognized at our graduation for having 20 or more hours of volunteer service.

Extra Credit!

  1. Extra Credit Opportunities:

    1. Read Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Fill out a worksheet for each chapter completed. 
    2. Fill out an unused Proactive Privilege card. (Schulist Only. Please read directions on the cards for specific information) 
    3. Choose an interesting question that can be answered with science (for example: Why and how does asparagus make urine smell like rotten eggs? Why are amusement park rides limited in size and speed?; Why do your ears “pop” when you go to Lake Tahoe?  Make a letter sized poster that explains the answer to the question, and includes pictures and diagrams. All writing must be in your words! You must include three or more sources of your information. 
    4. Visit a science museum. Make a picture book (with photos) of your visit to the museum. Be sure to include yourself in the photos you take. Next to the pictures, explain what you learned. 
    5. Perform a science experiment at home, in which you discover something through the process of experimentation and/or trial and error. Make a photo or a video of your experiment. Include an explanation of your procedure and what you learned. To find ideas, you might google “kids science experiments.” Preference should be given to current topics in our class. 
      1. Build a model of something we have learned about in class. Your model should help us visualize and understand a scientific concept. Examples: a “magic box”, a chemical reaction, an ionic bond, a solar powered car… .
    6. Go to a Marin Science Seminar. They take place at Terra Linda High School. The first is Wednesday, September 25, 7:30 pm. They will provide sheets to fill out. . Dates will be posted in science rooms throughout the year.
    7. Make a short video (edited to 5 min. or less) showing ways YOU can make a difference in: your carbon footprint; improving your study techniques; how science impacts your life.

    How Extra Credit is Scored:

    1. Extra Credit will be added to the student’s homework grade category.
    2. Extra Credit will be added at the end of the trimester.
    3. Extra Credit will not raise students more than one half grade (B+ to A-).

     

 

 

 

Science Competitions

Below are science competitions, which give an opportunity for my outstanding students to challenge themselves to do real science, investigate, innovate,  and with the guaranteed opportunity to learn and the possibility to win!

 

Design a Superhero Challenge - Students work in small groups to create a science based superhero. Entries due January 8. Winners present their displays at 2018 USA Science & Engineering Festival.

Ten Ways Parents can support their 8th grade science student...

 

 

1. Recognize, accept, and celebrate your child's unique talents, ways of learning, and their "quirks"....

(Have Growth Mindset.  My mindset - Every student is a potential "A" student...)

 

2. Let them solve their own problems - and learn from doing it.

(Say "how can you solve that problem...")

 

3. Give appropriate help for your child on projects

(sometimes "bonding with a project," is OK;  sometimes it's all on them... time management help may be needed)
 

4. Stay up to date on School Loop

(It's their job, but it helps to "stay in the loop.."

 

5. Connect with them about science!

(Science in the News, My Website, Cool Videos and TV shows like Outrageous Acts of Science and Brain Games. Respond with "what is your evidence?" to all “claims” like “I should have a 12:00 curfew...”

6. Encourage them to read "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens"

(Helps to remember "the big picture." See my website for other cool extra credit ideas...

 

7. Bike and Walk to School!

(See our 50% Challenge video about the benefits...)

 

8. Encourage them to participate in the Miller Creek Backpacking trip.

(look for info in January...)

 

9. Use the cell phone as a tool for learning.

(Slow motion and time lapse videos, photography for observing, fun science apps like "sky view," social psychology...)

 

10. Go to the Fenix next Thursday, September 7, for a Can Do Jazz fundraiser with Good Karma!

MC Environmental Ambassador

Tuesday, December 4. Mandatory Leadership Workshop for Environmental Ambassadors at study hall and after school 3:00 to 5:30 pm. 

Thank you for your interest in doing an MC Environmental Ambassador Project! 

1. Sign up for your project using this document (groups of three to five students)

2. Use planning form (linked to each project) to plan your project

3. Find a parent to help your group.

4. Attend MC Environmental Ambassador meetings on the first and third Fridays of the month.

5. Complete 20 hours of volunteer time toward your project, and turn in YES forms to document every two weeks.

Welcome to 8th Grade Science and Miller Creek Makers

Greetings Students and Parents,

 

I'm looking forward to the upcoming school year! I hope you had a fantastic summer with some rest, relaxation, and hopefully adventure too. I spent my summer hiking, playing music, playing tennis, biking, and traveling to Colorado and Santa Barbara. Get set to be challenged this year while unlocking  the mysteries of the scientific world. Thank you in advance to students and parents for your support and high effort to make 8th grade science great!

 

Miller Creek is undergoing exciting changes in the science department - including the creation of a Makers class, fully integrated science curriculum in all grades and the addition of new science teachers. We will be collaborating to create lessons that bring science alive. As I enter my 26th year of teaching, and 21st year here at Miller Creek, I am proud to be part of the community as a teacher, jazz combo leader, coach and parent. The Miller Creek Jazz Combo performs and records jazz at events in Marin County. Our goal is to have fun learning to improvise, play, and understand jazz and funk music. Check out music, videos and pictures here.

Supplies for 2018-19 School Year

 

I know parents are asked to purchase a small fortune of school supplies… My hope is that the spiral notebook can be purchased for less than $10.00, and that the other materials will be shared will all classes. Please make sure the spiral notebook is full size - 8.5 in by 11 in - many notebooks are sold 8.5 by 10.5 which makes them difficult to use.

(suggested items) highlighter pens, four-color ball point pen.

  1. One Spiral Notebook (8.5 by 11 in. only please) with 100 - 200 pages of graph or binder paper, with a pocket to hold loose papers. Recommended style

  2. One Folder with pockets for loose papers (Optional but helpful)

  3. Pencils and small pencil sharpener.

  4. One large glue stick (will need to be replaced throughout the year. Buy in bulk…)

  5. 1 box of colored pencils

  6. Basic calculator
